LUXOR / KARNAK
Great columns in Temple of Amon

The Great Hypostyle Hall has 134 columns in papyrus form, both open and bundled. The original roof is gone, but the hall was originally illuminated by windows high up on the walls.
Top photo shows the Forecourt, with the Kiosk of Taharqa in its centre, and two colossi of Ramses 2 in front of the 2nd Pylon. Behind this, you can spot the huge columns of the Great Hypostyle Hall.
The second photo shows the Great Hypostele Hall, spectacularly grand, and both impressive and crude. Dimensions are hard to justify with photo or film, each column is 23 metres high and 15 metres in circumference. But anyone with a shred of understanding of engineering will easily calculate that the columns are grossly overdimensioned.
