Valley of the Queens
Ancient Egyptian: ta-set-neferu

In Ancient Egypt, a royal necropolis dedicated to the wives of the kings of Egypt, from around 1560 until the middle of the 11th century BCE. This era is known as the New Kingdom, with the 18th, through the 19th and until the 20th dynasties.
In all, this burial place was used for some 480 years. This means that it probably was used longer than the Valley of the Kings; the oldest tomb here is from the 17th Dynasty, almost half a century earlier than the first tomb in the Valley of the Kings.
The valley is, from the first to the last tomb, 220 metres deep, 100 metres wide, opening up in the east, ending in two forks in the west. The mountain sides are largely of limestone.
A good number of princes and nobles were buried here, too, and the naming of this valley and that of the Valley of the Kings, must not be interpreted as a strict division between royal and female royals. The only absolute, is that no king was ever buried in the Valley of the Queens.
It is believed to be more than 70 tombs here, a good number of these were lavishly decorated. Few of the queen tombs challenge the finest of the king tombs, but the tomb of Nefertari (QV66), the wife of Ramses 2, is a spectacular exception.
The tombs are listed QV and a number. QV is for "Queens' Valley" and the number are consecutive, roughly reflecting sequence of discovery.
