Ta'wil
Arabic: ta'wīl

Term mainly used with Islam; originally synonymous with tafsir, commentary or explanation. Over time, ta'wil came to define material interpretation of the Koran.
Ta'wil has been used to interpret the Koran to clarify unity in faiths, assuring that religious ideas and customs were in accordance with the Koran. In many cases, ta'wil may be said to have been abused to define specific customs and ideas fitting the group or individual performing ta'wil. In these cases the understanding of the Koran has been tweaked, creating an understanding that other groups often would object to.
